The Skin Microbiome: Why It Matters – And How to Keep Yours Healthy
You may be familiar with the importance of maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, the ecosystem of bacteria in the digestive tract. But did you know that our skin has its own microbiome?
The skin microbiome is composed of bacteria, mites, yeast and fungi that serve a protective function against pathogenic microbes in the environment. It’s an integral part of the skin’s moisture barrier, which plays an important role in preventing moisture loss.
Spotting A Disrupted Skin Microbiome
When the skin microbiome is balanced and healthy, it looks smooth, radiant and youthfully resilient and “bouncy”  – essentially, the picture of skin health.
When skin barrier function is compromised, however, it can cause issues like
🔹acne
🔹eczema
🔹psoriasis
🔹a host of irritation rashes
🔹increased susceptibility to sun damage, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, accelerated aging-related symptoms
🔹dilated enlarged pores and rough uneven  texture
🔹excessively dull dry, or oily and dry combination skin.
The Three Elements Of A Healthy Skin Microbiome
There are three primary rules to keeping skin in an optimal – and healthy – state: Maintain the skin’s moisture barrier; maintain the microbiome with a healthy, robust moisture barrier and hydration throughout the skin; and maintain a pH level between 5.2 and 5.4 during the day for microflora to function optimally (at night; pH should be around 4.7 to support necessary renewal function).
The first step toward skin health is to evaluate your skincare routine and remove unnecessary (or harmful) habits. This might mean reducing the frequency of exfoliation or simplifying an overcomplicated routine that contains too many potent ingredients. Aggressive products that claim a “squeaky clean” feel, such as drying cleansers that strip away natural oils, should also be eliminated as they may have a negative impact on skin barrier function.
What exactly damages your skin barrier in the first place?
Whether skin is dry and dehydrated or oily and clogged with breakouts, it might be a sign that the skin microbiome needs help. There are a variety of factors that can disrupt the microbiome. These include using harsh skincare products, UV rays, exposure to environmental pollutants, poor diet and of course, we can never underplay the role of genetics, hormones and a healthy lifestyle with adequate sleep.
The most common barrier damage threat comes from stripping your skin of its natural oils with harsh foaming cleansers, scrubs, over cleansing, retinols, acne medication, and acids. Cleansing too frequently, foaming cleansers, cleansers with acids or benzoyl peroxide, all bar soaps, hot showers, most scrubs, scrubbing too hard, abrasive wash cloths, exfoliating too frequently, hot showers makeup remover clothes, waxing, etc.
Using over the counter skin care brands that contain countless irritants & chemicals, carcinogenic properties, alcohol and fragrance are also common culprits for barrier damage.
The biggest mistake people make is attempting to exfoliate and scrub their rough skin off – but that is the opposite of what we want to do!  Since dry skin is an indicator of extreme disrupted skin barrier function – the skin is telling us that it is deeply off balance, injured and in desperate need of repair – so additional stripping might make the texture temporarily softer and smoother – but it’s just doing more counterproductive damage.
After the damaging routines are removed, it’s time to add in the right skincare products: ones that are effective and high performing, but also gentle. Microbiome skincare that respects the natural moisture barrier will contain specific ingredients that work in harmony with the skin’s natural rhythms.
THESE EXCESSIVE HABITS WILL ACCELERATE THE AGING PROCESS AND CAUSE CHRONIC DRY SKIN
The high risk of a damaged moisture barrier results with a textured, dull, dry, scaly, patchy skin where wrinkles and fine lines are pronounced.
Common skin barrier function symptoms
With these symptoms of barrier compromise there is a higher risk of developing infections, sun damage, premature aging with deeper lines, wrinkles – and skin conditions like dermatitis rashes, eczema, rosacea, and deep hyperpigmentation.
When your skin barrier and skin’s microbiome is destroyed, all of your naturally occurring valuable protective healing properties are stripped out of the skin.

What Is Skin Flooding
Skin Flooding Is TikTok’s Buzzy New Trend For a Quenched Plumped Glowing Complexion
Instinctively, you’re probably reaching for hydrating, plumping serums and rich, thick creams. The good news is: You may have your hands on the right products, but stop and ask yourself – are you using them the right way.
Thankfully, Skintuitive MedSpa has the solution for deeply dehydrated and dry skin – a trending skincare routine that quenches, invigorates and retains moisture – and as a result will improve skin texture, shrink dilated pores and restores your youthful inner glow.
What Is Skin Flooding Process ?
The name may sound like a trendy fad, but the concept is simple. Skin flooding involves layering moisturizing products in a particular order to provide deeper, longer-lasting hydration. It involves four simple steps: gently cleansing your skin, spritzing on an activation PH balancing prep mist, applying a serum or two, and lastly, moisturizing your skin.
How do I skin flood ?
While the trend recently gained traction on social media, the concept of skin flooding is a familiar one in the world of skincare. It’s a common technique that involves layering serums and creams to “flood” the skin with hydration, increase the efficacy and absorption of products, and protect the skin barrier.
STEP #1
To effectively skin flood, you’ll have to start with a gentle face wash – either an oil-based cleanser or a cream-based cleanser – that cleanses your skin but doesn’t strip it of its natural oils. This way, you start with soft and balanced and receptive PH level for the rest of your skincare routine.

  • replace your shower head with a filtering shower head! Our city and well water is treated with chlorine and it usually contains questionable contaminants and irritants. I purchased this MAKEFIT brand for $47 on Amazon and it works well to keep my skin and hair healthy and hydrated. Instead of drying your face completely, keep it slightly damp. Moisturizers absorb water more effectively with a water source to draw from, so damp skin is more effective in this step. You can also mist your skin with a thermal water spray for a calming effect.
STEP #2
Next, you’ll want to saturate the skin on your face, neck and chest with a hyaluronic acid-based hydration primer. This powerful humectant balances the skin’s pH and pulls water into the skin allowing for efficient plumping water retention.
Use the tips of your fingers to gently massage the product into the skin of your face and neck. I like to use any leftover product on the back of my hands.
Recommended Hyaluronic Acid Based Activators:
🔹Hyaluronic Acid Rosewater Primer
🔹Osmosis Boost With Skin Strengthening Peptides

STEP #3
While using hyaluronic acid alone in this routine is enough to hydrate skin, adding
a few cosmeceutical-grade serums will be game changers.
✨ Regenerative Serums ✨
Our clean cosmeceutical-grade product lines provide a wide spectrum of highly concentrated age-defying, collagen stimulating serum formulas that target specific concerns such as hyperpigmentation, large pore size, skin laxity, rough texture, etc.

STEP #4
The last step in your skin-flooding routine is to apply a barrier-protecting facial lotion or cream to seal your products and to trap moisture loss, (trans-epidermal water loss).
 * Remember to layer sunscreen on top if you’re skin flooding in the morning.

The power of nutritional intervention
The other day, I was looking through old photos and something caught my attention – my skin looked so different back then, and not in a good way.
Before I understood the connection between nutrition and skin health, I struggled with dull, problematic skin that no amount of expensive creams seemed to fix. It wasn’t until I started diving deep into nutritional science that I discovered something that would completely change my approach to skincare.
Here’s what blew my mind: your skin is actually a window into your gut health!
(I know, I was surprised too when I first learned this.) The connection between your digestive system and skin health is so strong that scientists have actually named it the “gut-skin axis.”
And just like what you eat affects your gut health, what you put in your mouth also affects your skin health. In my research, I’ve discovered wonderful plant-based foods that can help give you that natural, healthy glow (and the science behind why they work!)
Let me share with you my top food choices when it comes to the health of my skin:
1. Rainbow-coloured vegetables
You know I’m always talking about eating the rainbow, but here’s why it’s especially important for your skin: each colour contains different antioxidants that protect your skin cells from damage. Red tomatoes have lycopene, orange sweet potatoes are packed with beta-carotene, and green spinach is loaded with lutein. I try to include at least three different coloured veggies in every meal!
2. Omega-3 rich foods
This one’s a game-changer! Foods rich in omega-3s (like chia seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, and avocados) help maintain your skin’s moisture barrier and reduce inflammation. I’ll never forget how adding these to my daily routine made such a difference in my skin’s hydration levels.
3. Fermented foods
Here’s where that gut-skin connection really comes into play. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and coconut yogurt support your gut microbiome, which in turn helps reduce skin inflammation and supports collagen production. (Plus, they’re delicious!)
4. Zinc-rich plant foods
Pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, and lentils are packed with zinc, which helps with skin healing and renewal. I always keep a jar of pumpkin seeds on my desk for snacking!
5. Vitamin C superstars
Did you know that vitamin C is essential for collagen production? Foods like bell peppers, strawberries, and kiwis are absolute superstars here. I love starting my day with a vitamin C-rich smoothie to give my skin that natural morning glow.
6. Polyphenol-rich foods
Green tea, dark chocolate (yes, really!), and berries are rich in polyphenols that help protect your skin from UV damage and premature aging. (Though don’t skip the sunscreen – these are just extra protection!)
7. Hydrating foods
Cucumber, watermelon, and celery are more than 90% water and help keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Plus, they’re packed with minerals that support healthy skin function.
The beautiful thing about caring for your skin through nutrition is that you’re not just working on the surface – you’re supporting your body’s natural ability to boost immunity and maintain healthy, vibrant skin from within!
